President Jerzy Buzek on European Day against Death Penalty on 10 October

European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek said on the European Day against Death Penalty on 10 October:

"The European Day against the death penalty is the day on which we recall that the defence of human rights and a justice system based on the full respect of human dignity is a key part of our shared European values.

The European Parliament has for many years been campaigning for a worldwide abolition of the death penalty. The death penalty is in contradiction to the values on which the European Union is based. Only countries in which the death penalty does not exist or which have abolished it may become members of the European Union.

This firm stance against the death penalty is also laid down in the Charter of Fundamental Rights. I would like to recall hat on the European continent, there is still a country, Belarus, where the death sentence is pronounced and carried out. We should all strive for a Europe without capital punishment.

The death penalty is a breach of fundamental human rights and failure to respect the dignity of the human being. The European Parliament will fight against the death penalty under any circumstances everywhere in the world.

20th anniversary of the Convention of the Rights of the Child

We particularly denounce the execution of juveniles and recall that this year is the 20th anniversary of the Convention of the Rights of the Child which explicitly forbids the execution of minors.

At this particular time we are extremely concerned about the cases of Behnoud Shojaee, Akram Mahdavi and Safar Angooti who are facing execution in Iran. The judiciary is also examining the fate of Ali Mahin Torabi who may still face the death row following the temporary suspension of the execution.

I would like to reiterate our appeal to every country still applying the death penalty to abolish it or establish, pending its abolition, a moratorium on executions and death sentences."
